Clinical Sites
UC Health University Hospital
UC Health University Hospital is one of the nation’s premier teaching hospitals, where high-quality, discovery-driven care and state-of-the-art technology come together to serve Greater Cincinnati and beyond. At UC Health University Hospital, the anatomic pathology department and clinical laboratory, both located in the Laboratory Medicine Building, facilitate service needs of the hospital.
Core anatomic pathology rotations for pathology residents are performed here, including autopsy and surgical and cytopathology. Multiple clinical pathology rotations are also performed here including general clinical laboratory, coagulation, and hematology. The clinical laboratory fulfills service needs of the hospital relating to hematology/coagulation, chemistry/toxicology, blood bank, microbiology and molecular diagnostics.
University of Cincinnati Physicians
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is an integrated member of UC Physicians, the faculty clinical practice of the UC College of Medicine.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is an international leader in research and medical care related to infant, child and adolescent diseases. At Cincinnati Children's, pathology residents get exposure to pediatric pathology, toxicology, chemistry, microbiology, hematology, cytogenetics and molecular pathology. This institution is a major participant for the residency training program. Physicians and researchers comprise the UC College of Medicine's department of pediatrics.
Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center provides surgical, medical and psychiatric services to eligible veterans in the Tristate region. The VA provides the pathology residents an adult case load of material covering a broad range of diseases, microbiology, chemistry, toxicology and cytopathology. This institution is a major participant for the residency training program.
Drake Center
Drake Center is the region's leader in specialized medical and rehabilitative care. Drake offers a comprehensive care continuum and a variety of services to help patients throughout their recovery, including long-term acute care, transitional care unit, Bridgeway Pointe assisted living, outpatient services wellness services and on-site research studies. At Drake Center, pathology residents experience the bacteriology component of microbiology.
Hoxworth Blood Center
Hoxworth Blood Center collects, tests, processes and distributes blood and its components to 27 hospitals and medical centers in a 17-county area of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The center is the only blood bank serving Greater Cincinnati. Hoxworth provides pathology residents with required training in transfusion medicine, blood collection and blood product collection. Residents also work closely with the clinical laboratory for all blood-related needs of University Hospital.
Hamilton County Coroner's Office
The Hamilton County Coroner's Office provides an environment of advanced experience in forensic pathology for the pathology residents and medical students.
Research Sites
Cardiovascular Research Center
The Cardiovascular Research Center (CVC) at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a long-standing tradition of research excellence. The CVC hosts many laboratories of the department.
Metabolic Diseases Institute
The UC Metabolic Diseases Institute (MDI) was created to foster excellence in biomedical research from basic science to translational medicine and facilitate collaboration among academic and industrial researchers. Work at the Metabolic Diseases Institute is primarily focused on the genetic, molecular, cellular and physiologic mechanisms of metabolic disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, cancer and cardiovascular disease. The MDI on UC’s Reading Campus is host to numerous research activities for the department.
