Cecilia Fenoglio-Preiser, M.D.MacKenzie Professor and Director
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Georgetown University College of Medicine, M.D., 1969

Cecilia Fenoglio-Preiser, M.D. has been involved for many years in investigations that define the molecular and phenotypic alterations associated with the development of malignancies. Experimental systems of interest encompass tumors of the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, colon, and anus. Each of these experimental systems are being investigated in terms of the pathobiology of the diseases as well as the potential use of individual tumor markers in diagnosis or prognosis of individual patients. Identification of new markers to define each stage in the evolution of cancer development allow one to detect patients at increased risk for cancer development. These markers also allow one to accurately assess the biology of a specific tumor in a specific patient. Experimental approaches involve analysis of oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, genetic instability, and tumor clonality. Investigative techniques include the use of standard histological examination to molecular biologic analysis of patient outcomes.
