Grant Stemmermann, M.D.McGill University, Canada, M.D., 1943 Grant Stemmermann's, M.D. research deals with a cohort of Japanese men (N=8006) living in Hawaii during the years 1940-42 that has been identified. These men were examined in the years 1965-68 in order to establish baseline physical, chemical, dietary and socioeconomic values with a view to assessing the impact of western life styles upon their disease experience. The men were born between 1910 and 1919. Their living and dead relatives have been identified. Serum samples have been obtained from each man and these have been stored at -70C. Paraffin blocks have been obtained from gastrointestinal, pulmonary and genitourinary cancers that have developed subsequent to examination. These are available for studies designed to correlate cancer risk factors with tumor markers, and for identification of gene rearrangements in tumors from men with known exposures to carcinogens. He is the Assistant to the Director of the Southwest Oncology Group gastrointestinal tumor block collection that is used to assess the molecular determinants of tumor progression.
