Hematology/Coagulation

The Section of Hematology and Coagulation  is an integral part of the clinical care of medical and surgical patients. This is a high-volume, computerized section that offers a comprehensive test menu of standard and specialized hematology and coagulation procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. Approximately 1.5 million tests are performed per year providing information about the cellular components of blood, quantitative measurement of the clotting abilities of blood and manual morphologic examination by highly skilled technologists.  The tests are reviewed by Hematopathologists to identify, quantify and classify the abnormal cells identified. Our highly qualified medical technologists work closely with clinicians in order to provide quality diagnostic testing and to accommodate particular needs in the management of their patients.

Among the tests offered are:
• Microscopic Blood Smear Evaluation and Manual Differential
• Hemostasis Screen
• Abnormal PT Evaluation
• Abnormal APTT Evaluation
• Factor Assays/Inhibitors
• Lupus Anticoagulant Assays
• Flow Cytometry

A diagnostic interpretive service is available to evaluate specialized testing of hemostatic and thrombotic abnormalities and determine proper testing based on initial results, medication history and prior laboratory testing and clinical findings.

This section also participates in training for the Hematology Oncology and Transfusion Medicine Fellowships.
