PEDIATRIC AND PLACENTAL RESEARCH:

With the recruitment of Dr. Jerzy Stanek, the Pediatric and Perinatal Autopsy Service has been rejuvenated with special investigations on the possible significance of proliferative markers and other phenotypic detectors of placental dysfunction. Dr. David Witte continues his collaborations on ApoJ gene with investigators based at Children's Hospital Medical Center, University Hospital, and the College of Medicine (Dr. Judy Harmony), and St. Jude's Hospital. The ApoJ work currently focuses on its role in heart development and in myocarditis. This work has resulted in publications on the potential role of ApoJ in cardiac valve morphogenesis. More recently, the group has isolated and cloned embryonic stem cells, and they are trying to characterize the mice carrying mutated ApoJ gene constructs. The group is also studying the role of ApoJ in myocarditis. Dr. Cynthia Daugherty's research has focused on analytic, electron microscopic, and morphologic analyses of fibrinogen-deficient mice.

Dr. Kevin Bove's long-standing focus on precursor lesions to pediatric neoplasms, particularly Wilms tumor, has resulted in publications on proliferative indices and differentiation markers in nephrogenic rests and a survey of Wilms tumor suppressor gene expression (WT-1) in archived Wilms tumor precursors in collaboration with investigators at the MGH Cancer Research Unit.

Dr. Edgar Ballard's research has focused on ultrastructure of pediatric neoplasms in nude mouse xenografts in collaboration with the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Division.
