Cytopathology:

Cytopathology is directed John Bishop.  The service is actively involved in evaluating cytologic specimens, both gynecologic as well as non-gynecologic, and it performs 600 fine needle aspiration procedures.  Aspiration of head and neck lesions represents the bulk of the superficial aspirates.  On the other hand, deep site aspiration, in cooperation with the Radiology staff, is rapidly growing.  To enhance the cytology service, ancillary studies such as immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry are utilized on fine needle aspiration material to characterize solid tumors and lymphoid lesions, and to explore tumor prognostic markers.  In order to maintain high quality service, continuous cyto-histo correlation is performed and is considered an integral part of our cytology practice.  Thin layer liquid based cytopathology are fully implemented.
