Principles of Pathology

This course is an introduction to the study of disease, including pathophysiology and dynamics of disease states. Disorders of the form and function of tissues are reviewed and their relationships to clinical manifestations are emphasized. Initial considerations concern general pathology, including such topics as cell damage, cell death, circulatory disorders, inflammatory conditions, genetic disease, neoplasia, developmental pathology, infection and immunity, environmental pathology, etc. Attention thereafter is directed toward these factors as they apply in the different organ systems. Concepts integral to laboratory medicine are included throughout the course, with special emphasis on clinical pathology in the Spring quarter. The course includes three hours of lecture and five to six hours of small discussion group sessions per week. The small discussion group presents an opportunity to review case-oriented material, with emphasis on pathophysiology. The lecture and small discussion group subject matter is coordinately scheduled to coincide with subjects being presented in other Year II courses, including Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Introduction to Clinical Practice.
