HEMATOLOGY AND HEMATOPATHOLOGY:

Dr. Carmelita Alvares has a strong interest in hematology research and is involved in many research projects at the university. She and Dr. Schumacher have been doing pioneering work in automated bone marrow analysis, which has resulted in numerous published abstracts and presentations at national and international conferences. They are also conducting ongoing investigative studies of erythroleukemia and are currently involved in a collaborative genetic study of erythroleukemia with the Genetics Department at UCLA. With her background training in genetics, the main focus of her research is the genetics of hematological malignancies, and she has many ongoing studies in this area with participation of pathology residents and collaboration with the Heme-Onc Division at UC and the Cytogenetics Division of the Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati.

Dr. Harold Schumacher, together with his hematopathology fellows, continues to investigate the erythroleukemia in relation to p53 and the MDR gene. Additional studies on bone marrow utilizing the Abbott Cell Dyne 4000 are under investigation. Comparison of manual and automatic instrumentation are currently under investigation. This is pioneering work in the area of bone marrow analysis.
