MEDICAL MONITORING:

Dr. Amadeo Pesce and his group pioneered an approach to measure the efficacy of measuring intracellular AZT levels inside cells to test the hypothesis that blood levels of the drug do not reflect its physiological effects.  He and his co-workers found that intracellular levels of AZT more accurately reflect the drug efficacy than do the blood levels.

Dr. Pesce, along with Paul Horn, Professor of Mathematics, have been developing new ways to determine reference intervals, i.e. healthy values.  This work has been published in Clinical Chemistry and is ongoing.
