Medical Biopsy Pathology

One of the program's significant strengths is the variety of medical and surgical biopsy material. In addition to the usual mix of cases routinely seen in Surgical Pathology, our active Nephrology and Hematopathology services, and our kidney, liver, and cardiac transplantation programs produce a large volume of renal, liver, and endomyocardial biopsies. This rotation focuses on the interpretation of these medical biopsies. While on the medical biopsy rotation, the resident not only learns the histopathology of renal, liver and cardiac disease, but also gains expertise in the use and interpretation of immunohistology and electron microscopy. The rotation involves daily formal and informal interaction with the clinical medicine services emphasizing the role of the pathologist as a consultant physician.
