Blood BankThe pathology rotation includes exposure to the various functional areas of the Hoxworth Blood Center. This Center serves not only as a regional community blood center but also provides transfusion services to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The rotation is comprehensive and exposes a resident to every major aspect of transfusion medicine. It prepares the resident to deal with basic clinical transfusion situations and provides a basis for further education in this discipline. The resident is introduced to, and participates in, the blood center activities of blood donor recruitment, donor collection, blood processing, component preparation, and product distribution and inventory management. Rotation on the transfusion service exposes a resident to the theory and practice of transfusion medicine. The resident becomes involved in patient management problems and clinical decision making when acting as a blood center consultant with on-call responsibilities. Other areas of resident involvement include product and therapeutic apheresis, tissue typing for organ transplantation, evaluation of red cell, platelet and leukocyte antibodies, compatibility testing, and autologous blood donation. The resident will also participate in the cellular therapies laboratory and learn about the processing and handling of progenitor stem cell products. In addition to the regular rotation schedule, journal clubs, management meetings, and lectures on various aspects of blood banking supplement the transfusion medicine experience. The resident gains knowledge of not only the technical and clinical aspects of transfusion medicine, but also of the regulatory, licensing, and quality assurance activities essential to a transfusion service and regional blood center.
