CytopathologyThe University of Cincinnati Cytopathology Division evaluates over 23,000 specimens annually. Of these, 19,000 are gynecologic, 1,200 are pulmonary, 1,400 are genitourinary, 600 are aspirates from various body sites and the remainder include body fluids, gastrointestinal, and cerebrospinal fluids.Responsibilities of this rotation include a daily review of all abnormal specimens with the staff pathologists. The resident correlates the patient's clinical presentation with the observations made on cytologic and surgical specimens. Didactic lectures by experienced cytotechnologists cover all areas of diagnostic cytopathology. An extensive collection of study slide sets which correlate cytology and surgical specimens is available, as is a comprehensive Kodachrome collection covering major aspects of cytology. Conferences include discussion of interesting cases and ASCP check samples, a journal club, and a weekly clinicopathologic conference with our active pulmonary service. Residents will gain experience in performing and reading fine needle aspirations and will participate in the FNA Clinic service at the Barrett Cancer Center. Upon request from the clinician, the staff cytopathologist and resident perform fine-needle aspirations in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Following collection, the specimen is prepared and examined microscopically, and a preliminary report is issued within one hour. All palpable lesions including those in lymph nodes, thyroid, breast, prostate, and soft tissues are accessible for aspiration. [ The Web at UC | UC Home ] |
