Diagnostic ImmunologyThe Diagnostic Immunology Division offers basic training to Pathology residents in all aspects of the in vitro testing of the immune system and immune components. This includes infectious disease serology, autoantibody testing, serum and urinary protein characterization and quantitation, and cell membrane marker characterization in leukemias, lymphomas, immunodeficiencies and transplant patients. Technology available for this testing includes ELISA, high resolution electrophoresis, flow cytometry, fluorescent microscopy, and cell culture facilities. The laboratory is the major reference lab in southwest Ohio and the tri-state region for immunologic testing and the only facility in the area for membrane marker and cell ploidy/cycle analysis of leukemias and lymphomas. Approximately 60,000 tests/year are performed, 30% of which are referrals. The resident is encouraged to integrate all aspects of immunology and hematopathology in the clinical evaluation of test results. Consultation with the clinical staff is encouraged. The Diagnostic Immunology rotation incudes a two week experience in Lab monitoring of Transplant patients. Responsibility of the resident for consultative interpretation of test results is developed early. In addition to the clinical responsibility, the resident is given the opportunity to develop small research/developmental projects that could become the basis for more extended research later in their training. In summary, the Diagnostic Immunology Division offers a unique opportunity to be well trained in an integrated program that focuses on clinical responsibility in patient care using the most modern technology.
