Molecular PathologyPathologists are increasingly turning to molecular methods to supplement traditional approaches to the evaluation and diagnosis of pathologic conditions. Our residents receive training in the performance and interpretation of a variety of molecular methodologies. These methods include Southern Blotting for the evaluation of linage and clonality in suspected lymphoproliferative disorders, as well as for detection of selected chromosomal translocation events such as the Philadelphia chromosome. The resident also gains experience in the performance and interpretation of polymerase chain reaction assays, a technology which promises to transform current approaches to microbiologic and genetic diagnosis. Experience with in-situ hybridization for virologic diagnosis in tissue sections is also included in this rotation. The Cytogenetics Service is a section of the Molecular Pathology rotation. During their rotation, residents have the opportunity to learn basic karyotyping techniques and interpret the results. Emphasis is placed on increasing the resident's understanding of the role cytogenetics plays in the classification and management of hematologic neoplasms. [ The Web at UC | UC Home ] |
